Position Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and community-minded reporter to cover local news in Knox County, Kentucky, for a weekly print and digital newspaper. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with a passion for storytelling, strong writing skills, and a commitment to informing and engaging the public. This position involves covering a wide range of topics, including city and county government, schools, crime, events, features, and breaking news.
Key Responsibilities:
- Attend and report on local meetings (e.g., fiscal court, city councils, school board).
- Write clear, accurate, and engaging news stories on deadline.
- Conduct interviews with local officials, residents, and newsmakers.
- Pitch and develop feature stories that reflect the character and issues of the community.
- Take photos and videos to accompany stories, when needed.
- Post stories and updates to the newspaper’s website and social media platforms.
- Fact-check and follow Associated Press (AP) style guidelines.
- Represent the newspaper at public events in a professional manner.
- Monitor public records, court filings, and press releases for potential news leads.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
- Strong writing, editing, and reporting skills.
- Knowledge of AP style and journalistic ethics.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.
- Basic photography and multimedia skills.
- Familiarity with rural communities and an appreciation for local news.
- Live in or in immediate area of Knox County, Kentucky.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience working at a newspaper or media outlet.
- Comfort using social media and content management systems.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel throughout Knox County.
Compensation:
Competitive and commensurate with experience. Includes mileage reimbursement and opportunities for advancement.
