The Lexington Herald-Leader is seeking an experienced journalist to be our lead opinion writer. The successful candidate will be a digital-first journalist with significant reporting experience and will work across multiple platforms writing editorials and columns that prompt change, break news, shape public opinion and elevate varied perspectives.

This writer will grow readership of Herald-Leader and Kentucky.com opinion journalism, focusing on local and state issues to produce unique content that will have an impact in the community, working with community columnists and reader submissions.

Essential functions:

  1. Researches, reports and writes columns and editorials on current issues with a digital-first mindset
  2. Assists in formulating editorial policy and with the editing and production of editorial and opinion content for digital, including community contributions
  3. Writes for both online and print, but a digital metabolism is required for this job. Works with video, social media, podcasts and analytics.
  4. Works with page design and editorial page production for print
  5. Assists with organizing and assessing letters to the Editor, community columnists and submitted Op-Eds
  6. Serves as the main Customer Service contact for the Editorial Page

Excellent writing and editing skills; excellent spelling and grammar; valid driverís license and reliable transportation and necessary. A background in local reporting and a demonstrated ability to write about complex policy issues are desired for this position. Some experience with video, social media, podcasts and analytics is recommended.

The ability to write clear, persuasive editorials and make sound judgments about the relative merit of columns with differentiate the best candidate. An ability to deal well with the public both in person and on telephone is also necessary.

A Bachelor's degree in a related field and 10 years of newsroom experience is required.
