The Central Kentucky News-Journal is seeking qualified candidates for the position of General Manager/Editor. The Central Kentucky News-Journal is a weekly community newspaper located in Campbellsville, KY, approximately 85 miles south of Louisville, KY. The newspaper has a postal delivery paid circulation of approximately 4,100 each Thursday.

The General Manager/Editor is responsible for achieving strategic and operational goals and objectives of the print and online business components of the company. Leading staff members in the development and successful implementation of immediate, short-term and long-term strategies to improve print and online news and information content, accelerate profitable advertising revenue growth of products and services, and expand the paid circulation penetration of the newspaper is paramount.

Qualifications

  • Experience as editor of a similarly sized community newspaper preferred; 3-5 years experience as a community newspaper senior reporter or equivalent required
  • General management of a similarly sized community newspaper desired
  • Demonstrated high ethical conduct and standards
  • Proven record of sound judgment in newsroom content and coverage decision-making
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision while effectively coordinating multiple news coverage projects and assignments on deadline and on budget
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to bring staff members together to achieve a common goal
  • Excellent writing and editing skills using computerized newspaper content management system
  • Ability to organize, edit, produce and paginate a weekly publication and online edition on short deadlines
  • Ability to work nights and weekends in accordance with the business needs of the newspaper
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver's license are required

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and lead a diverse staff in the functional areas of news, advertising, and customer service to achieve the desired business results of the newspaper.
  • Plan, develop and assign news coverage to local reporter/writer and correspondent.
  • Write compelling news and feature content for weekly newspaper, online edition and special sections.
  • Take digital photos for publication.
  • Write weekly editorials and columns.
  • Edit and proofread submitted and staff-written copy.
  • Design, layout and paginate the weekly edition, online edition updates and special sections.
  • Coordinate production of the weekly edition, special sections and other publications with staff at the regional printing and production plant.
  • Maintain an up-to-date online edition with compelling breaking news and updates to published content.
  • Plan, develop and assign advertising sales responsibilities to local sales representative.
  • Develop and operate within annual operating revenue and expense budget.
  • Develop and operating within an annual strategic plan.
  • Be active in the community and represent the newspaper in community and civic activities.
