The News-Enterprise, an aggressive daily newspaper in Hardin County, Ky., about 40 miles south of Louisville, is accepting applications for a reporter responsible for covering education and doing some general assignment stories in an interesting, diverse, nearly 105,000-population area that includes Fort Knox. This position requires someone who can spot trends within the school systems and report on decisions at the state and national levels that have an impact locally. The successful candidate will be a hard-charger who can report and write effectively on deadline. The successful candidate will enjoy writing about people and their daily lives, be a quick-study and understand that a newspaper's goal is to respond to the needs and preferences of readers in the communities it serves.   • Bachelor's degree in journalism preferred
  • Minimum of two years of journalism experience, including internships or college newspapers
  • Strong communication, interviewing, organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to write accurate, effective and engaging stories on deadline when necessary
  • Aggressive with strong initiative
  • Familiarity with requirements of photojournalism and ability to take publication quality images with a digital camera
  • Must be receptive and responsive to coaching
  • Available for evening and weekend work as scheduled
  • Must be adaptable with an emphasis on attention to detail

*Familiarity with the military and the Hardin County region is a plus

  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license to cover stories

Essential Functions:

  • Produce stories for the daily newspaper and online product from the beat and contribute to video footage for our website

*Develop and propose weekend story ideas and periodic special Impact Reports, working with copy desk and editors for maximum effect of the story

  • Develop and maintain sources and working relationships
  • Write stories focusing on Hardin County and Central Kentucky and localize national education trends
  • Produce stories with information that readers can use
  • Write stories about interesting personalities in the school systems

Schedule: 42-hour work week requiring some nights and weekends

Salary: Non-exempt hourly
