Public relations was never a field I was interested in or thought about as a career choice until I started working with the Bluegrass State Games. I have a degree in international studies and was a little hesitant about how I would fit in with the games and doing PR work. Those thoughts quickly disappeared once I started working and learning about the projects I would be working on this summer.
Within the first week I was put in charge of coordinating the Celebration of Athletes. This is the big celebration that helps kick off the start of the games every year. This task included creating and ordering invitations and coordinating the guests that would be there. I also had to coordinate the different organizations that were all involved in creating this event.
I also helped coordinate the details of the 5k run/walk with one of the other interns at the games. Both of these events allowed me to meet Shay Sorrells from the TV show “The Biggest Loser” as well as many prominent people from around Lexington.
I also did a little bit of marketing work, helping to promote several of the sporting events. This task lead to several afternoons spent walking into gun shops, swimming pools, country clubs and bowling alleys. All of these in hopes of promoting shooting, bowling and the games in general.
I made a ton of different connections as well as new friends along the way. This internship brought me in contact with local sports celebrities, government officials, and local businesses. I am very thankful for KPA and the state games for giving me this opportunity.
